Every year on April 22, people around the world pause to recognize Earth Day, a global reminder of the importance of protecting our planet. From climate change to plastic pollution, the challenges facing the environment are bigger than ever. But Earth Day isn’t just about the problems, it’s about solutions, awareness, and the small actions individuals can take to make a difference. As the day approaches, it raises an important question: what role do we each play in caring for our planet?
GCHS environmental science teacher, Bryan Tylkowski, talked about some ways you can individually help the planet. “Cleanups, beach cleanup programs around us, and you can even just grab a garbage bag and find a gross part in your neighborhood,” said Tylkowski. In an effort to support sustainably, Grayslake Central has begun to “replace lights to LED ones that are more energy saving, heating and air conditioning to be energy efficient” Tylkowski said. This shows how you can make a difference but also demonstrates that even communities can play a role in protecting the planet.
Across schools and communities, students are stepping up. Sophomores Maja Vukovic and Marija Blagojevic talked about ways they save the environment. I recycle water bottles, cans, and cardboard at home,” said Vukovic. “I recycle all biodegradable stuff, I buy subscriptions for bracelets that support ocean life such as Pura Vida, 4Ocean, but also pick up trash outside,” said Blagojevic.
When asked about whether or not they think GCHS students are eco friendly, Vukovic said “No, because I don’t think that most people care enough to.” “I think students at GCHS don’t care enough to be environmentally friendly but you can do simple things like recycle plastic and paper,”said Blagojevic.
As Earth Dayapproaches, it encourages everyone to reflect on their impact and take steps towards a more sustainable future.
