Congress shall make no law…abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press…” – The First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America

The vigilant protection of constitutional freedoms is nowhere more vital than in the community of American schools.” – Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District

Rampage is a student-produced news magazine published by Journalism I and II students at Grayslake Central High School. The publication has been established as an open public forum for student expression where students make all final decisions of content. As such, Rampage content will not be reviewed by school officials outside the adviser or restrained by school officials prior to, during, or after publication or distribution.

Therefore, material published in the news magazine may not necessarily reflect the opinions or policies of the Grayslake Community High School District 127, and neither school officials nor the school are legally responsible for its content.

Students are protected by and bound to the principles of the First Amendment and other protections and limitations afforded by the U.S. Constitution and the various court decisions reaffirming those principles.

Online media produced by Rampage are entitled to the same protections, and subject to the same freedoms and responsibilities, as media produced for print publication. As such, they will not be subject to prior review or restraint.

Letters to the Editor

Rampage welcomes letters to the editor from students, faculty and staff, administrators, community residents and the general public. Letters should be 300 words or less, contain the author’s name and phone number, and be sent to GrayslakeCentralRampage@gmail.com. Rampage will withhold the writer’s name upon request only if circumstances warrant its absence, and only at the discretion of the editorial board.

The Rampage editorial board reserves the right to withhold a letter and return it to the author for re-submission if it determines the piece is too long or contains errors in fact, excessive grammatical errors, or items of unprotected speech (see Law of the Student Press for specific legal definitions for libel, obscenity and invasion of privacy). Facts will be checked for verification, but will not be edited for punctuation, grammar and usage. Opinions expressed in a letter to the editor do not represent the opinions of the Rampage staff, the adviser, other faculty, the administration, the School Board, or advertisers.

Deadlines for letters will be no later than two weeks before the next publication date. All letters meeting the above criteria will be posted in full on the Rampage website at rampage.d127.org for a minimum of four weeks. The editorial board may also select items to be printed in full or in part for its monthly issue, as space permits.

Online Comments

As an open public forum, Rampage welcomes reader comments and debate. Rampage encourages community members to take ownership of their opinions by using their names when commenting. However, in order to ensure a diverse range of opinions, Rampage may allow anonymous comments as long as they are respectful and relevant, as determined by the editorial board. Comments are moderated, but not edited, and will appear only after being approved.

The Rampage editorial board solicits and accepts advertisements of varying sizes for its print issues. Ads are accepted in a variety of electronic formats and as attachments in email in most cases. The editorial board reserves the rights to reject any proposed advertisement for any reason. Advertisements that will not be accepted include, but are not limited to: advertisements for any products or services that would be illegal for minors to possess or use; partisan political advertisements; advertisements referencing, promoting, or disparaging religion; advertisements that are racist, sexist, homophobic or derogatory in nature; advertisements containing copyright violations; and advertisements referencing a particular person (including personal ads). The remedy for any cancelled advertisement shall be limited to a refund of any prepaid fees.

All ads must be accompanied by a signed contract. Advertisement rates and payment dates are established within the terms of the contract. Each ad will be labeled with the word “Advertisement.”

Please email GrayslakeCentralRampage@gmail.com if you would like the Rampage advertising team to send you an advertising contract and form.
