Students can have significant impact on their school. Grayslake Central has changed massively over time because of students. As a new generation of students emerges into GCHS and another gains new privileges, it’s important for students to have their voices heard. Rampage interviewed 12 students to get a grasp of what they would like to see at GCHS.

Students were asked the following question:

If you could change one thing about GCHS, what would it be?

Here are some common topics they mentioned.

• Lunch prices (x3): This has been a common complaint of students recently. “Stuff is expensive,” sophomore Johanna Kozmiuk said. Sophomore Robbie Carter suggests that lunches should be free. He said, “If all students are forced to come here, why can’t [lunches] be free?”
• Schedule times, as in the length of certain periods (x2): A few students mentioned the length of certain periods during the day. Sophomore Mason Bleyer explained an issue he has with the 5-minute passing periods. “We only have five minutes, and I have my classes on opposite sides of the school, so I need more time to get to my classes,” he said. Sophomore Matthew Drakeley said that students “should get all three lunches.”
• Class schedule structure (x2): Junior Allen Bogosh pointed out an issue he’s noticed with band kids’ schedules. “I had to take Dual Credit U.S History instead of [AP U.S History] and I’ve heard so many people have schedule problems and they’re all band kids,” he said. Sophomore Declan Hosken says that students should have a say in their Rams Block time. He said, “A lot of people like having [Rams Block] at lunch or having it right in the morning so they can [start] school later.”

  

Here are some individual suggestions that some students had:

• Guitar program: “I want to see electric guitars,” sophomore Fode Thiam said.
• Lunch privileges: Sophomore Tyler Schroer believes that all students should have more privileges during lunch. “Everyone should be able to leave during lunch, not just people who have a Rams Pass,” he said.
• Temperature: “It’s hot in here,” sophomore Tessa Fritz said.
• School day length: “If you play sports or have other activities, you don’t have enough time when you get home to do stuff for free time,” sophomore Owen Cavanaugh said.

Sophomore Aaden Moyer says he wouldn’t change anything. “It’s just a really good school,” he said.
