The Varsity girl’s basketball team did exceptionally well in the winter of 2025-2026. They made it to the sectional championship after winning sectional semi-finals, where they unfortunately lost to Vernon Hills High School. On Thursday, Feb. 19, 2026, the Girl’s Varsity Basketball team won regionals, which advanced them to sectionals. Then, on Tuesday, Feb. 24, the team won the semi-finals at sectionals, which led them to advance to the championship game against Vernon Hills. Despite losing the last game of the season, the girls had a very good season with a record of around .500 and then a 12-game winning streak. The team claimed the title of runner-up in Sectionals, capping off an outstanding season.
When asked about his perspective on the season, Head Coach Steve Ikenn said, “We won our fourth straight conference championship… and made it to the sectional championship game for a third straight year.” Despite losing three of the team’s main starting players due to them graduating the year prior, the team was able to come together and newer players stepped up. Ikenn said, “I think it was a great year in the testament to how hard the girls worked and how well they worked together.” He said that it was a great season because everyone had games where they stood out in excellence, and new or young players were able to contribute greatly to the team as well. Ikenn also said “While it hurts to have lost the way we did… they have to look back and realize just what a great year they had and how special the year was.”
Varsity player Autumn Aliff was asked about her perspective on the season. Aliff said, “I think the basketball season went pretty good. We accomplished a lot of good things that many people didn’t expect us to accomplish, and with losing three of our starters last year, it was really significant.” She said that the last few months were the highlight of the season because the beginning started off very slow. “We didn’t really know how to work together… but then at the end, we really pulled it through and we went pretty far,” Aliff said. With returning starters and new players joining the roster, it will be exciting to see how next season unfolds and what legacy this team leaves behind.
