The varsity boys golf team at GCHS competed and placed 7th at the sectionals at Park Hills Golf Course tournament on Oct.12. The team qualified for the sectionals tournament due to their regionals victory at Stonewall Orchard Golf Club on Oct. 6. The varsity team is coached by head coach Jim Mazzetta and assistant coach Brendan Kick.
Coach Mazzetta was ecstatic about how the team performed this year, and he was extremely proud of his team this year since the team won regionals and made it to sectionals. “The team did… extremely well this year, and I couldn’t be more proud of them. We won regionals altogether, and even though we didn’t do perfect at… sectionals we still had a really… good season.”
Coach Mazzetta is passionate about the sport and loves coaching the team at GCHS. One of the seniors on the team, Gianni Lucchesi, who has been on the team all four years said, “I did really well at regionals and … I didn’t do that well at sectionals, and… my score was high, but overall, I think we… did well the whole season.”
At GCHS, the boys golf team spends time each and every day, honing their skills so they can be the best they can be at golf.
When asked about how the program continued with the rising tension of COVID-19, the head varsity coach Jim Mazzetta said, “Even though at the beginning of the year it was difficult for me to help the players, we worked through it, and in the end, we had one of the best seasons we’ve had.”
Players echo similar feelings. Senior Keegan Fitzgerald said, “I’m so proud of this team, everything they’ve done and all the hard work they put in because they knew it was a good season. As a result of that hard work, we were able to go undefeated in matches and won regionals, which is the first time in school history, and I’m really happy the way it played out.”
