President Donald Trump has recently appointed Paula White-Cain as the leader of the new White House Faith Office. In an executive order announcing the creation of the Faith Office, the Trump administration said the purpose is to “assist faith-based entities, community organizations, and houses of worship in their efforts to strengthen American families, promote work and self-sufficiency, and protect religious liberty.” Paula White-Cain is a televangelist pastor and served as spiritual adviser for President Donald Trump during his first term. This appointment has drawn criticism from many people, like Grayslake Central Good News Club sponsor and math teacher, Jason Doll, who said “even a cursory survey of [Cain-White’s] life and publicly stated beliefs shows that she does not hold a view of the Bible that inerrant, sufficient, inspired, and closed, which has been the orthodox Christian view of the Bible for thousands of years.” While some understand the reasoning behind the new office and leadership positions, others have uncertainty of it’s execution. Bryan Peetoom, a 13-year veteran pastor at The Chapel Mundelein said, “it’s hard to imagine that natural biases won’t play a role in where the funding is sent.”
Paula White-Cain has sparked controversy throughout her career. She has delivered many controversial speeches, where she speaks in tongues, and runs an alleged “cash-for-blessings” scheme via her website, where most recently sold “resurrection seeds” for $1,144, and sold “seven blessings” for the Easter season. Doll said “[White-Cain] is part of a group of people appropriately labeled ‘prosperity Gospel,’ … because they do not preach a Biblical gospel. They preach in a way to take advantage of people to make themselves prosper.” Doll also said “I have no confidence Paula White is even a Christian.” White-Cain has claimed that Black Lives Matter (BLM) is comparable to the Ku Klux Klan (KKK), in a statement she released, claiming that things like the KKK, BLM, and ANTIFA are “not Christ-like” and “terrorist organizations.” White has raised eyebrows with her views and public statements on police violence and immigration policy and enforcement. Doll echoed his previous statements, saying “what [White-Cain] and many others do should be [considered] evil and disgusting to any person, but even more so to me as someone who is Christian, and does not want anyone confusing White’s scams for authentic faith in Jesus Christ.”
