Chromakopia is Tyler, the Creator’s seventh studio album. In terms of his extensive discography, how does this newest album stack up to the rest?
The album is a great listen from start to finish with mixing that blends the tracks but, at the same time, most of the tracks can stand on their own. Some standouts are “Thought I was Dead” and “Like Him.” Although the first and latter half of the album have very memorable songs, the beginning also has some great songs.
The story it tells is a perfect follow-up to his last album, Call Me If You Get Lost, where he talks about how far he has come. This album is about him being critical of himself; a stand out is “Hey Jane” where he talks down about himself and his thoughts about having a kid. It’s similar in many ways to Kendrick Lamar’s Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers.
Something else notable about Chromakopia is the way Tyler, the Creator is presenting it on his current tour for the album. Tyler uses colors in ways that are appealing to the eyes; a distinct green mixed with neutrals. When he uses green in his own costuming on tour, it’s a clear nod to the album cover.
Tyler’s performance on tour incorporates the signature Chromakopia mask and he uses very slight movements, which when something more explosive happens, it makes those more memorable.
Overall, I would say this album as a whole is a great addition to his discography. It may not be the best album he has made, but it surely is a great album.
