The indoor track team has begun to prepare for a new spring season. Coach Brent Pitt, Boys Track and Field Head Coach, said the season for the Boys Indoor Track team starts on January 21 and goes until May 24. No tryouts are required for this sport, as Coach Pitt doesn’t cut people from the team. Placement on JV or Varsity teams is decided by athletic level, where some athletes compete with varsity, and other athletes are put on JV for development. Besides Coach Pitt, the track team coaching staff also includes Coach Gantt, Coach Jazo, Coach Centella, Coach Fujiu, Coach Summers, and Coach Graf. Currently, the teams are practicing inside the school, in the hallways, the fieldhouse, the Big Gym and Small Gym, and outdoor track when weather allows. The team bonds almost every day since they practice almost every day. Senior and track team member Arthur Kimble runs the 60-meter dash and 400-meter dash. He started running track when he was in “Seventh grade, and then eighth grade, I took a break until my junior year.” His favorite thing about being on the track team is “the people and the environment.” When asked what he is most looking forward to this season, Kimble smiled and said, “Winning.”
The Girls Indoor Track team, according to Violet Rowe, a member of the team, the Girls Indoor Track season officially starts January 21 with no tryouts, meaning the Track Team is a no-cut, open team. Team placement for this team is determined by time trials. There are a total of seven coaches on the team, with Coach Colleen Wire as Head Coach. The other six coaches are Coach Hudley, Coach Dunn, Coach Domier, Coach Young, Coach Morenzoni, and Coach McClure II. The distance runners on the Girls Team usually practice outside on the track or running around the neighborhood if it is warm enough, and if it isn’t, they run around the hallways or go to the bike lab, and sprinters are on the track or hallways on a mat. The Girls track team does team bonding activities two to three times a season to continue building the strong bond of the team.
