“Stranger Things” is one of the most successful series on Netflix. On July 16, 2016 the first season was fully released. The show instantly was a hit and became a fan favorite. “Stranger Things” followed a young friend group in the 1980s trying to find their missing friend. Meanwhile around their hometown of Hawkins, Indiana, multiple peculiarities are taking place.
The newest season was the ultimate downgrade from their previous seasons. Many fans have been watching since the series first came out and continued to watch for nearly five years. Seeing how rushed the last season was, even though the creators and writers, the Duffer brothers, had years to plan the ending, it was a big disappointment to many.
After watching the finale many questions arose rather than answers. It was disappointing to see the Duffer brothers forget details that were a big part of the story throughout the seasons. A major thing that bothered me, as a viewer and fan since season one, was the sudden change in the Upside Down. In the first season people could not be in there for too long because the air was toxic. Every character even had to wear a hazmat suit while being inside. However, in the last season everyone starts going in the Upside Down with no problem. Another inconsistency of the Upside Down was not having a single demogorgon anywhere. Normally, the Upside Down is filled with them! But magically the Upside Down turned into a safe area. That was only one of the many things the creators forgot about. I am disappointed in the Duffer brothers, especially after seeing a clip in “One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5,” the making-of documentary that was released after the final season. Matt Duffer admitted going into production without having a finished script for the finale. They had a span of nine years to write the story without any rush, but they were not prepared, an issue that many fans had with the final season. The Duffer brothers had a long opportunity to create a successful ending, but didn’t.
Despite the many flaws and rushed final season, I don’t completely hate the ending. As a senior it was a bit emotional seeing them graduating knowing I will be doing the same this year. It still was a very emotional last couple of episodes. Just because the finale was not the greatest, it doesn’t speak for the series as a whole. Despite its flaws, it will always have a deep place in my heart.
