In Grayslake Central lies what the wrestling program thinks will be one of the best teams they’ve ever had: the 2025-2026 GCHS wrestling team. The wrestling former state runner-up, Vince DeMarco, and player Krish Sahu think this could be the second-best team they’ve ever had. The head varsity coach, Matthew Joseph, says that wrestling builds character and discipline. With strong upcoming freshmen and solid returning wrestlers, they believe this will be one of their best years ever.
The team feels confident about where it stands heading into the season. Head varsity coach Matt Joseph said, “we do have a lot of quality guys returning from last year. We have a state runner-up in DeMarco returning.” The level of talent returning this year raises expectations within the program.

Joseph also emphasized why wrestling matters at GCHS. “It builds character, builds discipline. It’s confidence,” he said. He believes those values shape athletes both on and off the mat and remains committed to reinforcing them.
Former state runner-up Vince DeMarco echoed Joseph’s optimism when asked how he feels the team compares to others this year. “I think we’re gonna have one of the best years we’ve had in a long time. So I think we’re looking pretty good,” said the junior, whose confidence in his teammates continues to elevate the group.
Krish Sahu pointed to the team’s work ethic as the foundation for success. “Honestly, just working hard. Don’t mess around,” he said, offering a glimpse into the team’s focused practice environment. He also believes this year’s roster has the potential to be one of the strongest in school history. “I think the first team is gonna be the strongest team in Grayslake Central aside from maybe 2020… and will probably be our strongest team at least for the foreseeable future.”
For Sahu, the team’s strength comes from talent across the lineup. “We’ve got studs all over—we got Dom at 106, Vince at 13, and me at 32 or two. And then Owen Floral, he’s an incoming freshman. He’s a stud. Also, a guy like Aidan Eisenberg—he’s also a stud. And we got a couple of injured guys, and when they’re back…” He believes their return will only strengthen a team that he says will be “very hard to beat.” With a deep roster, strong leadership, and high expectations, the wrestlers anticipate an impactful season, one that could leave a lasting mark on GCHS.
