Every student has experienced needing a snack in class. Normally, most students would want to head to the lunchroom to grab something, but as of this year that’s no longer allowed. The newly enforced school policy states that students cannot go to the lunchroom during class time. Instead, they are only allowed to go during passing periods or at their assigned lunch times. This change has caused some students to be frustrated, especially those who don’t have enough time to go during passing periods or forgot to eat breakfast. With this change, many are wondering, why can’t we go to the lunchroom? Why can’t we go grab a quick snack?

During passing periods, the lunchroom tends to get really busy, since that’s the only time students are allowed to go. The crowd of people makes it difficult to move around quickly and make it to class on time. As a result, some students go to the vending machines during class. This has led many students to believe the rule should be reconsidered and maybe changed, to make things easier to manage for students.
“Its not bad to go get food, it’s just taking away from instructional time, and if you’re saying you’re going to the washroom that’s not allowed,” said Associate Principal for Student Services Mike Przybylski. “The rule has always been there, we’re just enforcing it more. We need kids in class,”said Przybylski.
Even though the rule is supposed to keep students in class, many may feel that it has made their school day harder or that it is unfair. However, the

policy is designed to helps kids learn and stay in class during necessary instructional times.
Sophomore Amara Coleman said “Honestly [the policy] made me kinda sad… but it’s not going to stop me when I’m hungry. I ask to go to the bathroom then I go.”
According to English teacher Ms. Mackenzie Stephens, she always tries to work something out with the student to make sure they’re okay. “Assuming the problem is that they’re hungry, the solution would be to get them food,” Stephens said. Some teachers keep small snacks in their classroom to help stave off student hunger. “Keeping a snack or two in class would help [students] with not walking down to the cafeteria as well.”
