Boys’ golf swinging to state

It’s been a long road for the Grayslake Central golf team, but after three months of drives, chips and putts, the Rams have emerged with a 9-1 conference record. In addition to that the Rams also won their conference meet in late September and advanced to the sectional round of the 2A IHSA Golf playoffs in October. The Rams have also not had a single tournament where they placed outside the top 10.

“We only play on the toughest tournaments,” said varsity head coach Jim Mazzetta. “So even though we never really win those tournaments, we place high and we’re going up against the best teams in the state.”

Not only did the Rams do well as a team but as individuals as well. Seniors Michael Sisk and Tyler Hanson both qualified for the IHSA state finals which were held over the weekend of October 13-14.
“I was happy for them. They’re both seniors and they’ve both worked hard and they put in a good round in when they had to,” said Mazzetta.

Not only did the Rams succeed at the state level, but they also did at the conference meet where the Rams trio (seniors Hanson, Sisk and Alex Novack) swept the top three individual places and senior Zach Wilchlin received all conference honors. But even though the top four on varsity are the only ones who score, Mazzetta said that all the kids on varsity have been crucial to the team’s incredible success throughout the 2017 IHSA golf season.
