A letter written to our athletes
From the class of 2021
March 31, 2021
When the baseball team first got the announcement from Coach Whalen about the 2020 spring break trip to Disney being canceled, some seniors started tearing up; we were in awe. On Friday, Mar. 13, we heard school and sports were going to be postponed for two weeks. Everyone kind of played it off as “Oh sweet, we get three weeks of spring break!” We were at the tip of the iceberg for what was to come. Everything was unexplored waters, nobody knew what to do, so it became a waiting game. Then school sports and events got canceled one by one making many hopeless. Spring sports didn’t get to play and seniors didn’t get their “lasts”: last Disney trip, last baseball game, last Mr. GCHS, last prom, last time walking the hallways during graduation. After seeing what the class of 2020 had to go through, we now must appreciate our glimpse of hope this year. However, we are not in the clear.
We have a huge responsibility to stay safe during our seasons because there is still a risk of losing some time. But the best part is that we have the chance to play the sport we love. That alone should get you hyped up. No one wants to go down the same road as last year. Many seniors have yet to play a varsity season that we have long anticipated playing. Now, we all have our shot, our opportunity to play for those 2020 seniors and ourselves, too. Athletes have to stay safe for their team’s sake. Please don’t put yourselves in situations that could potentially jeopardize your season for at least two weeks. However, we understand that everyone is vulnerable and can contract the virus, but please keep aware of your surroundings; wear a mask when you’re out in public and sanitize frequently. Be a team player and protect yourself so you can protect your teammates. Let’s really take it to heart.
Thank you, stay safe, and best of luck to you.
