The Grayslake Central girls’ basketball team achieved many goals last year in the 2023-2024 season. The teams achievements the previous year led to an astounding finish as they won conferences, regionals, and sectionals. Unfortunately, the season ended in a Super Sectionals loss, as they were defeated by Montini Catholic 44-25. Math department chair and girls’ basketball coach Steve Ikenn discussed how they can improve going into the new season, building off of the success from last year. ¨ We’re going to try to learn from the things that went well last year; learn to try to correct what didn’t go so well for us,” said Ikenn.
Grayslake Central’s girls basketball team has a unique advantage going into this season, as they are made up of returning players with significant experience and chemistry from last year. Having no graduating seniors means that the team is familiar with each other’s playing styles and has the opportunity to refine their strategies further than just super sect;ionals. Many teams face notable step backs and go through an advanced learning and growing process, but that’s not the case for the team this year. With returning captains Maddison Hoffman and Annie Wolff, the team is off to a strong start again. The team looks to build off the chemistry and team building they had from the previous year – but that’s not all.
When asked what advice he gives the team, Ikenn said ¨take care of the little and big things. Take care of themselves, don’t worry about an end-of-season goal, worry about the game we’re going to play next.” The advice Ikenn gives his team seems to be effective and taken seriously based on the teams previous successful performances. As they move forward on this new journey, the team is looking to replicate their previous success and elevate their game. They are committed to building on the lessons learned, building strong team bonds, and keeping their eyes on each game as it comes. By focusing on improving game by game, they aim to achieve even more this season and make a deeper run into the playoffs.
Grayslake Central boys’ basketball teams 2023-2024 season ended with a three-way tie for conference with Lakes and Antioch, with an 11-3 record in conference and a 20-10 record throughout the season, despite the departure of senior players. The team’s enthusiasm and determination displayed by the returning players are significant as they work to fill the void left by the seniors, trying to bring a positive outlook into this new season. Under the guidance of Coach Brian Centella, the boys’ varsity basketball coach, the team is determined to build on the previous season’s successes. Their strong commitment to improvement and teamwork shows a promising opportunity for advancement in this season. When asked what the main goal this season is, Centella said ‘our number one goal is bigger than basketball; it’s to create an environment where we’re striving to make a difference on the court and in our community.”
The expectation for this team is to expand beyond just basketball; it goes into life goals, making everyone in the community better, and making themselves better people. Team members not only train athletically, but the focus on teamwork and personal development is evident, with practices reflecting a commitment to individual skill enhancement and collaborative play. This approach will help them succeed on the court and prepare them for challenges off the court. Coach Centella’s emphasis on creating a positive environment is key, as it encourages players to support one another, celebrate each other’s successes, and learn from failures together.
Coach Centella said, ¨I think this group has a lot of potential; this group can be a really good team.” The team has returning critical players who can help lead it again to success; from the players below stepping up and above leading this team, they look into a new season very eager and ready. With the common goal, they perfect their skills and refine their strategies, ensuring they are well-prepared come game day. The players’ eagerness to push their limits and support one another creates a strong bond that translates clearly on the court. With this collective determination, they are ready to leave a significant mark this upcoming 24-25 season.
